Camera filter with fine crosshatch pattern that transforms point light sources into four-pointed star patterns with symmetrical rays.

Definition

The 4-Point Star is a special camera filter that creates characteristic star-shaped light effects with four symmetrical rays. This effect is produced by a fine grid within the filter, which transforms point light sources into cross-shaped light beams. Unlike the 6-point or 8-point star, this filter creates more subtle, less dominant light effects, which are particularly used in romantic scenes or to emphasize candles, streetlights, or other point light sources.

The filter is mounted directly in front of the camera lens and is particularly effective in high-contrast lighting conditions. The intensity of the effect depends on the brightness of the light source, the aperture, and the contrast to the surroundings.

Practical Application

In German film and television production, the 4-point star is frequently used for atmospheric night shots, Christmas scenes, or love scenes. The filter has proven particularly effective in music videos, commercials, and romantic drama series. Its subtle effect makes it more versatile than stronger star filter variants.

When using it, care should be taken to employ the effect sparingly, as it can quickly appear cheesy. Modern cinematography tends towards more subtle applications, often combined with warm color temperature.

Technical Details

The filter is made of optical glass with etched lines at 90-degree angles. The strength of the effect varies depending on the filter density and manufacturer. High-quality 4-point stars are anti-reflective and minimally affect image sharpness.
