Wide Flood (WFL): the widest standard beam spread for PAR lamps; PAR64 1kW designation CP95 with approximately 70° beam angle.

Overview

Wide Flood (short WFL) is not a standalone fixture, but a designation for the beam spread of a light source. The term originates from the world of PAR lamps (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) and denotes the widest of the standard beam angle stages. In contrast to spot versions, which produce a narrow, intense cone of light, a Wide Flood lamp casts a broad, soft field of light over a larger area at a shorter throw distance.

With PAR lamps, the beam angle is not defined by adjustable optics, but by the diffusion lens permanently built into the reflector. The stage is thus an integral part of the respective light source: to switch from a narrow to a wide beam, the lamp (or bulb) is exchanged, not a setting on the fixture.

Classification of Beam Spread Stages

The common stages range from very narrow spot to Wide Flood. For the 1 kW PAR64 lamp, which is widely used in film and stage, the following CP codes and beam angles are standardized:

DesignationAbbreviationCP CodeBeam Angle (approx.)
Very Narrow SpotVNSPCP6012°
Narrow SpotNSPCP6114°
Medium FloodMFLCP6224°
Wide FloodWFLCP9570°

The exact angle specifications vary depending on the lamp type, wattage, and manufacturer; for WFL, values ranging from approximately 42° to 70° are mentioned depending on the source. PAR reflectors also produce an oval light spot, which is why the beam is often specified with two numbers (e.g., approx. 30° x 51°). By rotating the lamp in its holder, the long axis of the ellipse can be aligned.

Use on Set

Wide Flood PARs are used when a large area needs to be illuminated evenly and softly at a comparatively short distance – for example, as a broad base light (wash), for illuminating large backgrounds, or as a flat fill light. The wide beam angle reduces the point intensity compared to spot versions, but provides a softer edge and a larger illuminated area.

In practical lighting design, the stages are deliberately mixed: narrow spots for directed, high-contrast light over long throw distances, Wide Flood for areas and short distances. The designation "WFL" is found not only on PAR64 stage lamps but also on many reflector and PAR lamps with screw bases in the architectural and studio sectors, where "Flood" generally stands for wide beam angles (approximately from 45° upwards).
