Exposure meter that measures reflected light from a narrow image area, typically with a 1° metering angle, for precise exposure readings of specific scene regions.
A spot meter (German: Spotbelichtungsmesser or Punktbelichtungsmesser) is a handheld light meter that measures the light reflected from a subject – as opposed to an incident meter, which measures the light falling on the subject. Its optical viewfinder system narrows the measuring field to a very small section of the image (classically a measuring angle of around 1°), allowing exposure to be determined precisely for individual points in a scene.
This makes the spot meter the most precise of the measuring methods: the cinematographer (DoP) can measure individual highlights, shadows, or skin tones separately from a safe distance – for example, from the camera's viewpoint – without having to approach the subject closely.
Like all reflected light meters, the spot meter is calibrated to middle gray (18% reflectance). When any area is measured, the device suggests the aperture that will render that area as a middle tone. If the measured point is brighter or darker than desired in the final image, the user corrects accordingly, up or down.
The camera-related values are entered beforehand – ISO/ASA and shutter speed or sector of light (shutter angle); the device then outputs the appropriate aperture. By measuring multiple points (e.g., the brightest and darkest areas of the image), the contrast range of a scene can be determined and matched to the exposure latitude of the film or sensor.
The spot meter is the central tool of the Zone System, developed by Ansel Adams, which divides brightness values into graduated zones and assigns Zone V to middle gray (18%). Only with the precise measurement of a spot meter can individual subject areas be deliberately assigned to specific zones.
Both dedicated spot meters and combination devices that combine spot and incident metering are common. Well-known examples:
On a film set, the spot meter is used to check exposure ratios between areas of the set, correctly place skin tones, and ensure that critical highlights and shadows remain within the usable dynamic range. Even in digital workflows with monitoring and waveforms, the method retains its value for quick, location-independent control of individual image areas.
