Sigma full-frame cine prime lenses with T1.5/T2 aperture, constant 95mm front diameter, and Cooke/i metadata support.

Overview

The Sigma Cine FF High Speed Prime line (full name: "FF High-Speed Cine Prime") is a series of fast cine prime lenses from Japanese manufacturer Sigma. "FF" stands for Full Frame coverage, and "High Speed" refers to their wide apertures. The optics are based on the Sigma Global Vision still photography line but have been re-housed in cine bodies with manual focus and iris rings, consistent dimensions, and cine standards. They are aimed at productions requiring a uniform set of quickly interchangeable prime lenses for full-frame and Super 35 cameras.

The PL variant supports Cooke /i Technology via electronic contacts, enabling the recording of lens metadata (focus distance, focal length, aperture). Both sides of the rings are labeled, and the scales are engraved. An LPL variant for ARRI Large Format was announced by Sigma in 2018 but never shipped; the series is actually available only in PL, Canon EF, and Sony E mounts.

On-Set Usage

The uniform 95mm front diameter and similar dimensions allow for rapid focal length changes without needing to readjust the matte box or follow focus. The 43.3mm image circle covers common full-frame/large-format sensors from RED, Sony, Canon, and ARRI and is designed for 6K to 8K resolutions. The consistent T1.5 aperture makes the series attractive for low-light situations and shallow depth of field. Sigma offers the optics individually as well as in sets (e.g., 5-lens and 7-lens sets) in a case.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
