Practical Bulb

Overview

A Practical Bulb refers to the actual light source (the bulb or lamp) that serves as a motivated light source within a luminaire visible in the frame – a so-called Practical like a table lamp, floor lamp, wall light, or ceiling fixture. The bulb typically sits in a standardized screw socket (E26 in North America, E27 in Europe, sometimes also B22 bayonet) and replaces the commercially available household bulb without requiring modification of the luminaire itself.

While in the past simple incandescent, halogen, or energy-saving lamps were used, specially developed LED Practical Bulbs for film and TV are increasingly being used on set today. These combine the familiar bulb shape with professional light control: stepless, flicker-free dimming, adjustable color temperature, often full color (RGB), and wireless control. This allows a lamp standing in the frame to be used as a real light source and simultaneously controlled remotely like a spotlight.

Technical Features

Compared to household bulbs, film-ready LED Practical Bulbs typically offer:

• Standardized Screw Socket – E26/E27 (sometimes B22), fits existing practical fixtures.
• Adjustable Color Temperature (CCT) – from warm incandescent light to daylight.
• High Color Rendering Index – CRI/TLCI in the very high range for natural skin tones.
• Stepless, Flicker-Free Dimming – suitable for high-speed shooting.
• Wireless Control – via app, CRMX, and/or DMX, often with battery operation.

The Aputure Accent B7c operates flicker-free up to 1,000 fps and provides approximately 70 minutes of runtime at full power via battery; the Astera LunaBulb is also approved for outdoor use with IP44.

On-Set Usage

Practical Bulbs are used to make lamps visible in the frame function as actual light sources, thereby creating a realistic, motivated lighting scheme. Since LED bulbs can be dimmed and color-adjusted remotely, the crew can adapt the brightness of a lamp on set to the exposure without altering the setup or having to hide a separate spotlight.

Practical advantages on set include low heat emission (safe for lampshades and tight decorations), low power consumption, and – for battery-powered models – wireless operation. Often, the bulb is further softened with diffusion material inside the lampshade to avoid harsh shadows from the bare bulb.
