Narrative

narrative instance narration frame narrative

The way a story is told in film — its structure, perspective, and the chronological flow of the action.

Technical Details

Cinematic narratives typically follow the three-act structure with a weighting of 25%-50%-25% of the total runtime. Act I (Exposition) lasts an average of 22-25 minutes for a 90-minute film, Act II (Confrontation) 45-50 minutes, and Act III (Resolution) 15-20 minutes. Plot Points mark structural turning points: Plot Point I between minutes 17-25, Midpoint around minute 45, Plot Point II between minutes 70-75. Narrative levels are distinguished by diegesis (story world), extradiegetic elements (voice-over, music), and metadiegetic levels (flashbacks, dreams).

History & Development

Griffith established the classic Hollywood narrative structure in 1915 with "The Birth of a Nation," running 195 minutes. Syd Field codified the Three-Act Paradigm in "Screenplay" in 1979, and McKee refined the beat sheet method in "Story" in 1997 with 15-20 story units per screenplay. The French New Wave broke with linear structures starting in 1959; Godard used jump cuts in "Breathless" for narrative fragmentation. Hyperlink Cinema (since the 1990s) and non-linear narratives have established alternative structural models.

Practical Application in Film

"Pulp Fiction" (1994) uses a three-episode structure with an anachronistic arrangement over 154 minutes. "Memento" (2000) tells its story backward in 22 color sequences of 5-7 minutes each, interspersed with 22 black-and-white sequences in chronological order. "Citizen Kane" (1941) utilizes five flashback levels through different narrators, each lasting 15-25 minutes. Modern series like "Westworld" work with multiple time levels over an average episode length of 58 minutes.

Comparison & Alternatives

Narrative differs from pure plot through the inclusion of discourse (the manner of presentation). While story refers to the chronological events, narrative structures their cinematic presentation. Alternative approaches include the Hero's Journey (17 stages according to Campbell/Vogler), the Save the Cat method (15 beats according to Snyder), and experimental forms like Mosaic Narratives. Interactive storytelling and VR experiences expand traditional linear narrative forms with multiple plot threads and 3-8 alternative endings.

News

The Achtung Berlin Film Festival 2026 is explicitly seeking 'bold narratives' in its competitions for short, documentary, and feature films from the Berlin/Brandenburg region. In filmmaking practice, current discussions about lighting setups for narrative short films demonstrate the technical aspect of narrative implementation, with LED panels being preferred over tungsten lighting for controlled environments.

Perspectives

Cinematographer

Producer
