Modular camera crane by Grip Factory Munich (GFM), configurable as either platform or remote-operated system.

Overview

The GF-8 is a modular camera crane from the Munich-based manufacturer Grip Factory Munich (GFM). It is one of the most common crane types in professional film and commercial shoots and can be configured as a platform crane (with a seat for the camera operator and assistant) or as a remote crane (with a remote head). The crane relies on a consistently modular concept: the arm consists of interchangeable sections and identical poles, allowing the arm length to be adjusted in increments to suit the specific task.

With the optional Xten kit, the standard GF-8 can be extended to the GF-8 Xten, offering additional height and reach.

Technical Specifications

Reach and maximum payload depend on the chosen configuration. Typical values from the GFM datasheet:

ConfigurationMaximum Reach Height
Platform, 2 personsapprox. 4.5 m
Platform, 1 personapprox. 5.8 m
Remote head, 80 kg payloadapprox. 7.2 m
Remote head, 50 kg payloadapprox. 8.0 m
  • Manufacturer: Grip Factory Munich (GFM)
  • Pivot height: approx. 1.54 m
  • Surface: hardened Hard-Coat finish
  • TÜV certified and safety tested
  • Selection of multiple base dollies possible

On-Set Use

Thanks to its modular design, the GF-8 can be set up in numerous variations and is quick to rig. In the platform configuration, one or two people sit at the end of the crane and operate the camera directly; in the remote configuration, the crane carries a remote head, allowing for significantly greater reach and height – with correspondingly more payload at lower capacities. The crane is mounted on a base dolly and can also be moved on tracks depending on the ground surface. With the Xten kit, the operational radius is significantly expanded; the GF-8 Xten reaches double-digit meter heights in remote operation.
