Gel Mode: firmware feature of tunable LED fixtures that digitally replicates classic Lee and Rosco color gels, eliminating the need for physical gel sheets.

Overview

Gel Mode (also "Gel-Modus" or "Filter-Modus") is an operating mode for color-tunable (RGBW/RGBA) LED fixtures, in which the light reproduces the color impression of a classic color filter (English: gel) from manufacturers Lee and Rosco digitally. Instead of clamping a physical filter in front of the unit, the gaffer selects the familiar filter designation or number (e.g., Lee 201 or Rosco-Calcolor) in the menu or via DMX, and the fixture mixes the corresponding color from its LED primary colors.

The term became widely known primarily through ARRI: The SkyPanel soft lights introduced Gel Mode with firmware 2.0, and ARRI's control app Stellar also provides a searchable gel library. Comparable filter emulations are offered by lights from other manufacturers such as Astera.

How it Works

Gel Mode typically works in two stages:

Select Base Color / Light Source: First, it is determined which light source the filter should affect – classically Tungsten (artificial light) or Daylight. This corresponds to the practice of using the same filter in front of sources with different color temperatures.
Select Filter: Then, the desired filter is selected by name or number. The fixture reproduces its color effect via its calibrated LED light engine.

The filter libraries are sorted according to the usual categories (Color-Correction, Storaro-Selection, Rosco Calcolor, Lee Color-Correction, Cosmetic Series, etc.). The selection can be accessed directly on the device and via DMX/control protocols.

Use on Set

Gel Mode significantly speeds up color changes: filter changes, trimming, and taping are eliminated, and corrections can be made remotely via console or app. Furthermore, there is no loss of power absorbed by the filter, and filters cannot fade or melt. A typical use case is matching an LED fixture to an existing lighting mood (Light-Source-Matching), such as to artificial or daylight, or to practicals on set. It should be noted that the emulation remains an approximation of the original filter – depending on the fixture and the color quality of the LEDs, the result may differ from the impression of a physical filter.
