Concept

Murnau AI illustration
flow roll conflict

Visual and narrative foundation of a film. Defines image language, color palette, camera movement, lighting mood. Working reference for all departments from pre-production through set.

Technical Details

A film concept is typically divided into six core areas: Logline (1-2 sentences), Synopsis (0.5-1 page), Character Concept (2-3 pages), Style and Genre Description (2-4 pages), Target Audience Definition (1 page), and Distribution Strategy (1-2 pages). In German-speaking countries, film funding bodies expect documents between 8-12 pages, while US studios prefer pitch concepts of a maximum of 5 pages. Digital concepts increasingly integrate mood boards with 10-20 reference images and color palettes according to the Pantone system for visual concretization.

History & Development

Irving Thalberg first introduced systematic project concepts at MGM in 1935 to reduce development costs, which averaged $50,000 per discarded screenplay. Walt Disney perfected the multi-stage concept process with storyboards and character sheets for "Snow White" in 1937. In Germany, the concept system was not established until 1967 with the Film Funding Act, which mandated structured project templates for funding applications. Since 2010, video pitches of 3-5 minutes in length have increasingly supplemented traditional text concepts, particularly with streaming platforms like Netflix, which introduced their "Concept-First" process in 2019.

Practical Application in Film

Christopher Nolan developed an 18-page concept for "Inception" with detailed dream level diagrams before writing the 148-page screenplay. Wes Anderson fundamentally creates 25-page concepts with precise color codes and location sketches as a basis for his production designers. For low-budget productions under 500,000 Euros, the concept often serves as a sales tool for co-production partners and replaces costly teaser productions. Television concepts for series additionally include detailed season arcs and character development charts for up to five seasons.

Comparison & Alternatives

The concept differs from the treatment by its strategic focus – while treatments tell the story chronologically, concepts define the creative vision. One-pagers summarize projects on a single page but are only suitable for elevator pitches. Bibles (Show Bibles) expand concepts with comprehensive world descriptions and are primarily used for fantasy and science fiction projects. Lookbooks focus exclusively on visual references and often completely replace text-heavy concepts for fashion or commercial films.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
