Chimera Small softbox (approx. 24 × 32 inches / 60 × 80 cm) for diffusing film lights.

Overview

"Chimera Small" does not refer to a standalone fixture, but rather a softbox (called "Lightbank" by the manufacturer) from the US manufacturer Chimera in the Small size class. Chimera (founded in 1980) produces clip-on fabric softboxes that transform the hard light of spotlights into soft, diffused light. "Small" is one of several standard sizes, positioned between the smaller classes (Extra Small, XX-Small) and the Medium class.

The softbox is not attached directly to the light fixture, but connected via a suitable Speed Ring (adapter ring) that is chosen for the respective fixture model. This allows the same softbox to be used with different fixtures. Chimera offers the Small size in several product lines (including Video Pro, Video Pro Plus / "Plus One", Pro II) as well as in variants specifically designed for modern LED fixtures like ARRI Orbiter or Creamsource Vortex.

Technical Specifications

The following values refer to the classic Video Pro Plus Lightbank in Small size (Chimera model 8125), one of the most common versions. Other lines and LED variants may differ.

The "Plus One" line is characterized by removable front screens that allow fine adjustment of the light's hardness and brightness. Additionally, screens in 1/2 and 1/4 gridcloth as well as CTO/CTB correction panels are available.

Set Application

The Small size is a compact, versatile softbox for situations where space is limited or a more directional soft source is desired – for example, as beauty light at close range, as fill light in interviews, or as an accent in tight sets. Compared to larger banks, it produces less enveloping wrap-around light, but is easier to position and balance on a stand.

Important for selection: The Lightbank is a passive grip/light modifier accessory and does not contain a light source itself. It must match the fixture (observe wattage/heat rating of the respective line) and be mounted using the correct Speed Ring. Heat-resistant lines are provided for classic Tungsten/Hot Lights, while specific Small Banks are available for LED fixtures.
