Blazar Remus: anamorphic 1.5x cine lens series for full-frame cameras, delivering classic widescreen cinema aesthetics.

Overview

Remus is a series of anamorphic cine lenses from manufacturer Blazar Lens with a 1.5x squeeze factor. The lenses are designed for full-frame sensors (36 x 24 mm) and produce a classic widescreen image via a 3:2 full-frame desqueeze. Compared to classic 2x anamorphics, the 1.5x factor is less pronounced, allowing the lenses to be more compact and lighter, making them suitable for run-and-gun setups while retaining typical anamorphic characteristics such as oval bokeh, distinctive flares, and a pronounced separation effect between foreground and background.

The series is available in several focal lengths. The flares are available in silver, blue, or amber depending on the variant. In addition to the standard Remus line (PL/EF), there is the Remus-M variant with mirrorless mounts (native Sony E, with interchangeable L- or RF-mounts).

On-Set Usage

The Remus series aims for a comparatively affordable entry into anamorphic shooting with full-frame cameras. Due to the uniform 80 mm front design and the 0.8 MOD gears, the lenses can be operated with common matte box and follow focus setups without adjustment; the consistently identical front outer diameter facilitates quick lens changes without re-fitting matte box rings. The 77 mm filter thread also allows for the direct use of screw-in filters.

The 1.5x factor delivers an anamorphic look with oval bokeh and streak flares, without the full distortion of a 2x anamorphic. The selectable flare colors (silver, blue, amber) allow the image mood to be adapted to the specific production.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
