Technical Specifications

The ARRI M18 delivers 18,000 lux at 5 meters in standard mode. The HMI lamp produces 5600K daylight with a 95+ CRI (Color Rendering Index). The optics consist of high-quality glass with an optimized Fresnel lens (200mm diameter).

The ballast is digitally controlled with remote operation (wired or wireless possible). The focusing mechanism operates continuously like classic Fresnels, from flood (approx. 70°) to spot (approx. 26°). Dimensions: 320mm x 240mm x 280mm, weight only 4.2 kg (lamp housing). The ballast weighs an additional 2.5 kg.

  • Total: approx. 2100W

Heat generation is moderate – about 800 watts of heat radiation, significantly less than Fresnel equivalents.

History & Development

The ARRI M18 was introduced in 2010 as a compact successor to older HMI 4K systems. The development aimed for efficiency and light quality for modern digital sensors, not raw light output.

ARRI optimized the optical design specifically for digital cinematography – the M18 light was intentionally tuned to be warm and organic, while competing technical products appeared cooler and more artificial. The digital ballast integration enabled remote control and automatic ignition.

The M18 became the preferred standard HMI for European and American mid-budget productions from 2012 onwards.

Practical Use in Film

The ARRI M18 has dominated location shooting for drama and independent series since 2010. In Sean Baker's "Tangerine" (2015), street scenes were lit with mobile M18 HMI rigs – the compactness allowed for quick set changes in urban environments.

In European TV series like "Das Boot" (2018), the lighting team used M18 systems for the warship interiors to leverage the ARRI light signature for cinematic quality. The warmth of the M18 light emphasizes psychological tension.

The M18 is now standard for local and smaller international productions with ARRI camera chains.

Variants & Alternatives

The ARRI M40 offers double the light output (4000W HMI equivalent to approx. 40A) for larger lighting tasks. The ARRI L7-C LED system offers similar compactness with less power consumption, but less light output.

Competitor systems like Angenieux HMI 1800 or Mole-Richardson HMI-18 offer comparable light output, but significantly less "ARRI warmth" – professional DPs consistently prefer ARRI light.

The M18 remains preferred for location and mobile shoots due to its compactness and light signature quality.

Der ARRI M18 ist mein Lieblings-HMI für Location-Dreh – die Kompaktheit passt in jeden Van, das 1800W HMI-Licht ist hell genug für T2.8/ISO 800 auf 5 Metern. Die ARRI-Optik erzeugt eine charakteristische weiche Lichtkante mit subtiler Wärme, die digitale Sensoren lieben. Das Vorschaltgerät ist klein genug, um direkt neben der Kamera platzierbar. Ich nutze den M18 als Key für Close-ups und Halbtotalen – die optische Qualität ist höher als bei billigen Alternativen, Bokeh ist cremig-weich.

Der M18 erlaubt mir narrative Lichtsetzung ohne industrial Aufwand. Die ARRI-Lichtsignatur erzeugt psychologische Wärme selbst bei 5600K Tageslichtwert. Im Vergleich zu älteren Fresnels wirkt das M18-Licht weniger technisch, organischer – das Publikum spürt den Unterschied unterbewusst. Ich nutze zwei M18 für Small-Talk-Szenen, um Nähe und psychologische Intimität zu erzeugen.

Producer

Ein ARRI M18 kostet im Verleih etwa 60-80 Euro pro Tag mit Vorschaltgerät und Stativ. Das ist attraktiv für Independent-Serien und Streaming-Content. Das Kompaktformat reduziert Transport- und Setup-Kosten. Ein M18-Set (Scheinwerfer, Vorschaltgerät, Stativ, Filter/Diffusion) läuft auf etwa 200-250 Euro pro Tag – wettbewerbsfähig zu älteren 2K-Fresnels, aber mit besserer Lichtkvalität.
