20 inch C-Stand: compact grip stand with 20-inch riser column, the industry standard for holding flags, reflectors, and small lights on set.

Overview

The 20 Inch C-Stand (also known as "20-Zoll-C-Stand", "Baby C-Stand", or Century Stand) is the compact version of the classic grip stand, which is standard equipment on practically every film and TV set. The size designation "20 inches" refers not to the overall height, but to the length of the main riser column (Main Section). C-stands are typically divided into 20", 40", and 60" based on this column length; the 40" version is considered the standard size, with the 20" stand being a smaller, more transportable, and space-saving design.

The C-stand serves as a universal support: Flags, cutters, nets, reflectors, diffusion frames, and smaller lights or accessories can be attached to the Grip-Head (Gobo-Head) and extension arm (Gobo-Arm) and precisely positioned in space.

Construction and Features

  • Leg Base: Three staggered legs at different heights. This allows multiple stands to be nested closely together and set up near each other; the top leg is usually independently adjustable to stand securely on uneven ground or over obstacles.
  • Riser Column: In the 20" model, the main column is approximately 20 inches long, typically with additional telescoping riser sections locked by collars.
  • Material: Predominantly steel (chrome-plated or black anodized), providing stability and counterweight when the arm is extended.
  • Included: Usually includes a Grip-Head and a 20" Gobo-Arm.

Base Designs

The 20" C-stand is available with different leg variations:

  • Sliding Leg / Standard Base: A sliding leg for uneven terrain.
  • Turtle Base (C+ Stand): Detachable "turtle" base – the riser can be separated from the leg assembly, allowing the column to be used very low to the ground or transported individually.
  • Low Profile: Low-profile design for particularly close-to-the-ground positioning.

Note: Maximum height and weight vary depending on the manufacturer (e.g., Matthews, Avenger/Manfrotto, Kupo, MSE Grip) and number of risers. "Master" or 3-riser versions with a 20" column can reach significantly higher.

Usage on Set

The 20" C-stand is preferred when less height is needed, space is limited, or multiple stands need to be transported – for example, for low-to-the-ground placement of flags and cutters, for holding small LED panels or reflectors, and for negative fill close to the ground. As with any C-stand, the basic grip rule applies: place the longest/highest leg under the extended arm and secure the arm clockwise ("righty tighty") so that the weight tightens the knob itself. For securing heavy or widely extended loads, a sandbag is additionally placed on the leg assembly.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer

As a cinematographer, I particularly value the 20-inch C-stands for their versatility in lighting tight spaces. They're perfect for quickly positioning kicker lights or small LED panels without me having to worry about stability. The compact base allows me to place multiple stands close together without them getting in each other's way.

Director

For me as a director, these C-stands are an invisible but indispensable part of the creative execution. They allow my lighting team to react quickly to my wishes regarding the mood of the light, without large, bulky tripods restricting the actors' freedom of movement. Especially during dialogues in small rooms, I can have subtle light accents placed this way, which support the emotionality of the scene.

Producer

The 20-inch C-stands are a cost-effective investment that quickly pays for itself through their robustness and versatility. They significantly reduce setup times, which directly translates into cost savings. Since they require less transport space than larger stands, they also optimize logistics costs for exterior shoots.
