10,000W Fresnel spotlight for extreme exterior shots against sunlight, backlighting, and large venue productions with maximum dramatic impact.

Technical Specifications

The 10K Fresnel achieves 80,000-100,000 lux at 8 meters in spot mode – light intensity that outshines sunlight. The Fresnel lens has a diameter of 350mm and is thermally optimized. Color temperature: Standard HMI 5600K (Tungsten variants are rare due to power consumption).

The unit requires robust cinema rigging on jib arms, cranes, or lifts. Manual focusing is often impossible due to the risk of heat – professional sets use motor-controlled focusing mechanisms with remote control. Dimensions: approx. 550mm x 420mm, weight 18-20 kg (without rigging). Power consumption:

  • HMI 10K: 10,000W lamp + 2,000W ballast = 12,000W total

Heat generation exceeds 6,000 watts – the unit can only be operated for extended periods in outdoor situations with air circulation.

History & Development

The 10K Fresnel originated in the 1960s for large-scale Hollywood exterior shoots. The variant became the standard for massive outdoor set illumination in action films and war films.

The HMI revolution of the 1980s made the 10K HMI the preferred standard, as it enabled daylight values without filtration and optimized power consumption. Modern models feature programmable motor focusing and safety electronics for automatic shutdown in case of overheating.

Practical Use in Film

The 10K Fresnel was the backlight tool for Hollywood blockbusters from 1980 onwards. In James Cameron's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991), the intense outdoor action choreography was lit against sunlight with several 10K HMI Frenels.

In Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" (2014), DP Hoyte van Hoytema used 10K Frenels for the intense exterior scenes to create psychological tension through high-contrast lighting. Light contrast became a dramatic tool.

Today, the 10K is primarily used in big-budget blockbusters, large-scale exterior shoots, and location filming with extreme lighting conditions.

Variants & Alternatives

The 10K HMI is the de facto standard for this wattage class (Tungsten versions are uneconomical). There is no mechanical alternative with higher direct light intensity in focused mode.

LED alternatives such as ARRI SkyPanel X600 or Titan Tube 8x8 can achieve similar area lighting but require multiple units and cannot replace the focused punch of the 10K Fresnel. HMI arrays (multiple 4K or 6K HMIs) offer flexibility and better heat distribution.

The 10K Fresnel remains indispensable for direct backlight reinforcement against sunlight and dramatic exterior illumination of large-volume sets.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer

The 10K Fresnel is my extreme light for impossible exterior situations. When the sun is directly overhead and I need eye lights and skin modeling, I'll rig the 10K HMI at 8-12 meters high as a backlight booster – it cuts through the sunlight and creates contours with photographic precision. The power draw (12,000W) requires mobile generator trucks. The thermal load is extreme – the fixture gets critically hot after 20-25 minutes, then a 15-minute cool-down is mandatory.

Director

The 10K Fresnel is the instrument of cinematographic tyranny – I use it for psychologically intimidating lighting in horror or thriller scenes. The light creates deep, almost black shadows and turns faces into mask-like objects. In exterior scenes against sunlight, the 10K creates contrast that physically wakes the audience up.

Producer

A 10K Fresnel rents for 150-250 Euros a day – that's only sustainable for big-budget productions. The additional generator rental truck (Mobile 63A power unit) costs 300-500 Euros a day. The 10K is only justified for blockbuster productions, large TV series, or prestige films where visual drama is central.
