1/8 Minus Green: the lightest correction gel in the Minus Green series, a magenta-tinted filter that subtly reduces green cast from fluorescent, HMI, and LED sources.
“1/8 Minus Green” refers to a color correction gel in a delicate magenta hue. It belongs to the family of Minus Green filters, which counteract the characteristic green cast (“green spike”) found in discharge and fluorescent lamps, as well as many LED and HMI sources. Since green and magenta are opposite on the color axis, the magenta gel neutralizes the excess green component.
The designation “1/8” indicates the weakest correction level within the series. The strengths increase from 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 up to full Minus Green – the higher the value, the stronger the magenta correction. 1/8 Minus Green is therefore used for fine-tuning when only a slight green cast needs to be compensated. The counterpart is “Plus Green” (green), which conversely adds a green cast to match artificial light to greenish fluorescent environments.
1/8 Minus Green is cataloged by several manufacturers under their own numbers. It is nominally equivalent to the Kodak Wratten value of CC035 Magenta.
| Manufacturer / Product | Number | Transmission |
|---|---|---|
| Rosco Cinegel, “1/8 Tough Minus Green” | #3318 | 89% |
| Lee Filters / Rosco e-colour+, “Eighth Minus Green” | #279 | approx. 86.5% |
The gel is available in sheets and rolls. It does not alter the color temperature in terms of a Mired shift but exclusively corrects along the green-magenta axis (CC correction).
1/8 Minus Green is typically placed in front of the light source – for example, as a sheet in barndoors or as a roll over fluorescent tubes and LED panels. Use cases:
The exact required level can be determined with a color meter, which displays the magenta/green deviation in CC values. 1/8 Minus Green corresponds to a correction in the order of CC035 Magenta.
