Z CAM E2: Compact 4K cinema camera with 17.3×13mm CMOS sensor, 120fps at 4K DCI, modular design with no physical controls, app-based operation only.

Technical Details

The E2 uses a 17.3 × 13 mm CMOS sensor and achieves a maximum resolution of 4K Cinema (4096 × 2160) at up to 120 fps, as well as 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) at 160 fps. The camera supports H.265/HEVC compression with bitrates up to 300 Mbps and records in 10-bit 4:2:2 internally to CFast 2.0 cards. The native ISO is 500, and the dynamic range is 13 stops. A special feature is the modular design without integrated controls – operation is exclusively via Wi-Fi via smartphone app or Ethernet connection. The camera features an active Micro Four Thirds mount and requires external power supply via 12V DC.

History & Development

Z CAM first presented the E2 at NAB 2018 and launched it in the fall of 2018 for $1,999 USD. The company expanded the E2 series in 2019 with the E2-M4 (full-frame) and E2-F6 (6K), later followed by the E2-F8 (8K) and various S variants. The modular construction was deliberately oriented towards the requirements of drone pilots and gimbal operators who needed compact, lightweight cameras without superfluous controls.

Practical Use in Film

The E2 primarily established itself in low-budget film production and with content creators. Typical workflows include integration into drone systems, gimbal rigs, or as a B-camera in larger productions. Its compact dimensions allow for shots in tight spaces or hard-to-reach locations. Disadvantages include the exclusive app control, which can be impractical on professional sets, and the limited lens selection of the Micro Four Thirds system. However, the internal 10-bit recording eliminates the need for external recorders for many applications.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, the E2 offers higher frame rates but less intuitive operation. It is significantly cheaper than the RED Komodo but does not achieve its image quality. Modern alternatives include the Sony FX3, Canon EOS R5 C, or newer Z CAM models like the E2-F6. The original E2 is today primarily suitable for budget-conscious productions or as a specialty camera for difficult installation positions.
