Dutch manufacturer of modular camera rig systems featuring 15mm steel rods and CNC-machined components. Enables precise, repeatable setups for professional cameras up to 15kg payload capacity.

Technical Details

Vocas systems are based on 15mm steel rods with a tolerance of ±0.02mm and standardized 60mm spacing between the rods. The baseplates feature precisely CNC-milled mounts for Arri standard rosettes and 1/4" and 3/8" threads. Typical rod lengths range from 150mm to 600mm, with a load capacity of up to 15kg per pair of rods. The modular system includes matte box mounts, follow focus systems, shoulder pads, and handles with defined dimensions for reproducible setups.

History & Development

Vocas van der Meer founded the company in 1991 in response to the increasing miniaturization of cameras, which nevertheless required professional handling characteristics. In 1995, the 15mm rod standard became an industry norm after Vocas developed the first modular systems for Betacam SP cameras. With the DSLR revolution starting in 2008, Vocas expanded its product range to include compact rigs for Canon 5D Mark II and similar cameras. Since 2015, the company has increasingly focused on high-end systems for digital cinema cameras such as Arri Alexa and RED cameras.

Practical Use in Film

Vocas rigs are preferably used for handheld shots and Steadicam work, where precise balance and ergonomic handling are crucial. Cinematographers appreciate the reproducible weight distributions that can be precisely adjusted using the modular components. In studio productions, Vocas systems allow for quick conversions between different configurations – for example, from tripod operation to shoulder setup in under two minutes. The standardized dimensions facilitate integration with third-party manufacturers such as Arri, Tilta, or SmallRig.

Comparison & Alternatives

Vocas primarily competes with Wooden Camera (USA) and Tilta (China), but differs through higher manufacturing tolerances and longer product cycles. While Tilta focuses on cost advantage and Wooden Camera on innovative designs, Vocas positions itself as a premium provider for durable systems. For low-budget productions, alternatives such as SmallRig or 8Sinn offer similar functionality at reduced prices. For high-end productions with frequent camera changes, the Vocas premium is justified by its precise mechanical properties and the Europe-wide availability of spare parts.
