Chinese manufacturer of wireless monitoring systems; Storm series transmits 4K60 up to 915m range, more affordable alternative to Teradek.
Technical Details
The Vaxis Storm 075 Pro transmits 1080p60 signals with 75ms latency over the 5GHz band, while the Storm 3000 handles 4K60 footage with a 3000-foot range (915 meters). The devices utilize H.264 compression and support HDMI and SDI inputs and outputs. Typical transmission power is 23dBm, with the transmitter's power consumption at 8 watts via Sony NP-F batteries. The Atom 500 series operates with 2.4GHz/5.8GHz dual-band technology and achieves data rates up to 1080Mbps. Monitoring is done via dedicated receivers or the mobile Vaxis Vision App for iOS/Android.
History & Development
Vaxis was founded in Shenzhen in 2018 and established itself as an alternative to established manufacturers Teradek and Hollyland. In 2019, the first Storm system was launched, followed by the Atom series for the consumer market in 2020. The Storm 075 Pro from 2021 introduced improved antenna arrays, and in 2022, the Storm 3000 series extended the range to over 900 meters. Since 2023, Vaxis has been integrating AI-based image optimization and advanced monitoring features into its latest models.
Practical Application in Film
Vaxis systems are used in low-budget productions and independent films where the price-performance ratio is crucial. DoPs utilize the devices for Director's Monitoring during handheld camera work or Steadicam operations. In the Netflix series "The Witcher" (Season 3), second units used Vaxis Storm 075 for drone monitoring. The small size (85x55x25mm for the transmitter) makes them ideal for compact camera rigs. Disadvantages include robustness compared to Teradek systems and occasional connection dropouts in congested radio environments.
Comparison & Alternatives
Vaxis positions itself between Hollyland (cheaper, fewer features) and Teradek (more expensive, professional standard). While Teradek Bolt 4K LT offers 1500 feet of range for 2800 Euros, the comparable Vaxis Storm 1000 costs around 800 Euros. SmallHD and Atomos are increasingly integrating their own wireless solutions, and Blackmagic Design is developing its own monitoring systems with the Video Assist 12G HDR. For high-end productions, Teradek or Paralinx remain the standard; Vaxis is conquering the mid-range market between 500-1500 Euros system price.
