The spaces were indeed often cramped—renovated basements, restaurants, or artist pubs—and audiences literally brought towels to be able to sit on closely packed chairs at all. The paradox: this spatial confinement became a brand. It signaled artistic seriousness, authenticity, resistance against commercial superficiality.
In practice, "Towel Cinema" functioned as a counterpoint to the established distribution apparatus. While large cinemas calculated their auditoriums by seating capacity, repertory cinemas operated with a different economy: they didn't need mass audiences, but the right target group—film students, intellectuals, cinephiles, those who appreciated avant-garde positions. A repertory cinema with 30 to 80 seats, where the audience knew each other and discussed films after the screening, was more economically viable than a half-empty 500-seat auditorium. Intimacy was a calculated business model.
Its significance for film culture was considerable: "Towel Cinemas" were production sites for taste and discourse.
