Technical Details

The Exmor Super 35 sensor operates at a resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels and offers a native ISO sensitivity of 3200. The camera utilizes XAVC-I and XAVC-L codecs with bitrates up to 600 Mbps and records to SD cards or XQD media. The detachable handle contains the battery, controls, and the 3.5-inch LCD display. Two XLR inputs, a 3G-SDI output, and HDMI 2.0 complete the connectivity. The Variable ND filter function electronically reduces the amount of light by 1 to 8 stops without physical filters.

History & Development

Sony introduced the FS5 in September 2015 as a compact alternative to the larger FS7. The camera was intended to bridge the gap between professional camcorders and cinema cameras. In 2017, a hardware update followed with the FS5 Mark II, which brought a 5-inch monitor and expanded codec options. RAW recording was enabled through external recorders. In 2020, Sony ceased production and replaced the model with the FX6.

Practical Use in Film

The FS5 established itself in documentary work and low-budget productions due to its handheld suitability. Netflix series like "The Crown" used the camera for spontaneous shots and tight spaces. The 120fps function in Full HD made it popular for commercials with slow-motion sequences. The Silent Mode without a mechanical shutter allowed for discreet recording during interviews or covert documentaries. Its small size permitted gimbal use without complex stabilization systems.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Sony FS7, the FS5 offered fewer professional connections but significantly better mobility. The Canon C100 Mark II competed as a similarly compact alternative but only achieved Full HD resolution. Modern successors like the Sony FX6 or Canon C70 offer better low-light performance and expanded codec options. For pure handheld work without a rig setup, the FS5's ergonomics with its detachable grip remain unique, while current models mostly rely on traditional camera bodies.
