European standard power connector (230V/16A) supplying film lights up to 3.7kW, commonly used for LED panels, small Fresnel units, and HMI ballasts in the electrical department.

Technical Details

The Schuko connector operates at 230V AC with 50Hz and is rated for continuous currents up to 16A, corresponding to a maximum power of 3680 watts. The characteristic 4.8mm pins are spaced 19mm apart, while the side grounding contacts are designed as spring-loaded metal strips. Schuko plugs are fundamentally reversible. Variants include angled versions (90° and 45°), rubber plugs for outdoor use according to IP44 standard, and multiple power distributors (Schuko chains) with up to eight outlets.

History & Development

The Schuko standard was developed in 1926 by Albert Büttner and introduced as DIN standard VDE 0620 in 1930. Originally designed for household appliances, the system also established itself in professional event technology from the 1960s onwards. In 1986, the European Union adopted the Schuko standard as CEE 7/4, leading to its widespread adoption in 40 countries. Since 2008, modern Schuko connectors feature enhanced contact safety (VDE 0620-1) and reduced heating under full load.

Practical Use in Film

Schuko connections power LED panels up to 300W, Fresnel spotlights up to 2kW, and ballasts for smaller HMI fixtures. The Gaffer department uses Schuko power distributors for decentralized lighting distribution, for example, in interior shots in living rooms or for backlight setups. Productions like "Das Boot" (2018) or "Parfum" (2018) primarily used Schuko-powered LED systems for interiors. The advantage lies in its universal availability on set, while the 16A limitation quickly becomes a limiting factor for larger lighting units.

Comparison & Alternatives

Schuko differs from CEE connectors (blue 16A, red 32A) in its higher availability but lower power capacity and lack of polarity protection. For professional equipment over 3kW, CEE 32A (7.4kW) or Harting connectors are used. US-American NEMA-5-15 plugs (125V/15A) require transformers for European use. True1 connectors from Neutrik offer Schuko compatibility with professional locking as a modern alternative, but their adoption is slow.
