1. Overview

The Panavision Ultra Panatar is a 1.25x anamorphic 65mm lens, developed for the large-format capture format. Panavision manufactured these optics exclusively for in-house rental – purchase was never possible. The 40mm focal length covers a wide field of view within the 65mm frame.

3. Creative Use

The 1.25x squeeze does not provide a classic anamorphic look – ellipses and lens flares are significantly more subtle than with 2.0x optics. Barrel distortion at the edges and flares in blue, amber, and green with moderate intensity give the image character without intrusive artifacts. The lens is primarily available through Panavision's own rental houses (Hollywood, London, Sydney) and is almost exclusively used in big-budget productions shooting on 65mm film. Due to the exclusive rental model, availability should be clarified early in pre-production.
