Olympus OM Zuiko lens series with 60+ focal lengths (8–1000mm), renowned for compact design and multi-coated optics. Popular on 16mm film cameras and digital cameras.

Technical Details

The OM System comprised over 60 different lenses with focal lengths ranging from an 8mm fisheye to a 1000mm telephoto. Standard lenses like the 50mm f/1.8 weighed only 185g and measured 33mm in length. The OM mount has an inner diameter of 42mm with a flange focal distance of 46mm. Special features include multi-coating from 1973 onwards and precise mechanical construction with all-metal housings. Aperture control is achieved via a mechanical coupling pin that interfaces with the camera body.

History & Development

Developed under the direction of Yoshihisa Maitani, the OM System debuted in 1972 with the OM-1 camera. The first Zuiko lenses set new standards in miniaturization without compromising image quality. In 1973, Olympus introduced the MC-Zuiko series with multi-layer coating, followed by the improved OM-Zuiko series in 1978. Production ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the analog OM System, but the optical designs live on in modern Micro Four Thirds lenses.

Practical Use in Filmmaking

16mm film cameras like the Bolex H16 were often fitted with adapted OM-Zuiko lenses due to their excellent sharpness and low weight. Documentarians particularly appreciated the 21mm f/2 and 85mm f/2 for their compact design and natural color rendition. The lenses are also found on Super 16 productions and digital cinema cameras with appropriate adapters. The smooth bokeh rendering and warm color characteristics made them popular vintage lenses for modern productions.

Comparison & Alternatives

In contrast to the bulky Canon FD or Nikon AI lenses of the same era, OM-Zuikos were significantly more compact with comparable performance. Modern successors are the Olympus M.Zuiko lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras, which continue the optical legacy. For film productions, vintage OM-Zuikos today compete with Zeiss Contax/Yashica lenses and Soviet Zenit optics as a cost-effective alternative to modern cine lenses.
