Nautical twilight: twilight phase between 6° and 12° below horizon with 0.1–3 lux illuminance and 8,000–12,000 K color temperature. Lasts 20–40 minutes, providing diffuse omnidirectional light without hard shadows.

Technical Details

Nautical twilight lasts between 20-40 minutes, depending on latitude and season. The available illuminance ranges from 0.1-3 lux, which corresponds to approximately 8-12 stops below daylight. During morning nautical twilight, the color temperature rises from 12,000K to 8,000K; this progression reverses in the evening. The light direction is omnidirectionally diffuse, virtually eliminating hard shadows. Modern digital cameras typically require exposure times of 1/15s at f/2.8 with ISO 3200 for correct exposure.

History & Development

The systematic use of nautical twilight in film began in the 1970s when Nestor Almendros specifically utilized these lighting conditions for Terrence Malick's "Days of Heaven" (1978). Previously, this phase was technically difficult to master, as film emulsions were not sensitive enough to light. With the introduction of push-processing and later digital sensors from 2005 onwards, the "Magic Hour Extended" became established as a plannable creative option. Cinematographers like Emmanuel Lubezki perfected the technique from 2010 onwards through the use of LED panels for subtle fill light.

Practical Application in Film

Roger Deakins used nautical twilight in "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) for the iconic exterior shots of Las Vegas to enhance the dystopian atmosphere. The technique requires precise scheduling: shooting begins exactly at sunset, maximizing the available 25-35 minutes. The advantage is natural color saturation and a uniform lighting contrast of 2:1 to 4:1. The disadvantage is the impossibility of repeating the exact lighting conditions and limited shooting time.

Comparison & Alternatives

Nautical twilight differs from civil twilight (0-6° below the horizon) due to its bluer color temperature and lower brightness. Astronomical twilight (12-18° below the horizon) offers even less light with a color temperature of 15,000-20,000K. Large LED panels with CTB (Color Temperature Blue) filtering serve as a technical alternative, but can never replace natural gradation. For controlled conditions, DoPs often use SkyPanels with a 10,000K setting combined with haze machines.
