Aputure M40: Compact LED light with 4,680 lumens, 70-minute runtime, and magnetic rear mount for mobile film production.
Technical Details
The M40 produces a luminous flux of 4,680 lumens with a CRI value of ≥95 and a TLCI value of ≥96. The unit measures 195 × 120 × 55 mm and weighs 660 grams including the battery. The integrated lithium-ion battery (2600 mAh) allows for a runtime of 70 minutes at 100% power or 360 minutes at 10% power. Dimming is stepless from 0-100% via a side control dial. The aluminum housing features passive cooling without a fan and is IP54 rated for dust and splash protection.
History & Development
Aputure introduced the M40 in 2020 as an addition to the AMARAN product line, aiming to bridge the gap between smaller LED panels and larger COB lights. The development focused on mobile productions requiring battery-powered solutions with high light output. A revised version followed in 2022 with improved battery technology and optimized heat dissipation.
Practical Application in Film
The M40 is suitable as a hard light source for portrait shots, key light in interviews, or as accent lighting in larger setups. Documentary filmmakers appreciate its quick deployment without cabling, while its compact dimensions allow for discreet placement within the frame. With the optional softbox attachment (60 × 60 cm), the M40 becomes a soft light source for close-ups. The magnetic back allows attachment to metal objects without a tripod.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to the less powerful M18 (18 watts/1,800 lumens), the M40 offers more than double the light output at similar dimensions. Alternatives to the M40 include the Godox ML60 (60 watts, but larger and heavier) or the Nanlite Forza 60B (bicolor, higher price). The M40 positions itself as an optimal compromise between portability and performance for mobile productions, while larger COB lights from 100 watts are more suitable for stationary sets with mains power.
