Leo

Murnau AI illustration
blocking off screen video village

The area on set that is outside the camera's field of view, where crew and equipment can safely stand.

Technical Characteristics

The Leo is my most important means of communication with the crew. I have to clearly state where the Leo is so that lighting technicians, sound recordists, and assistants know where they can position themselves without walking into the shot. The Leo is a procedure in film production. The area on set that lies outside the camera's field of view and where crew and equipment can stand.

Areas of Application

As a director, I need to know the Leo to understand where I can position myself during the take to observe the actors without being in the shot. The Leo area determines how much space we need on set for crew and equipment – this influences location choice and studio planning.
