Gaffer tape wound in a loop—ultra-light, tension-ready for cable runs, rigging, field repairs. Comes off clean, takes load without slipping.
On set, you need something that isn't just lying around like a whole roll of gaffer tape ballast, but still delivers. Lasso tape is designed precisely for this – thin, high-tensile fabric tape, pre-wound into handy loops. A roll alternative for grips who work fast and don't want to load their bags with unnecessary weight.
The practice is simple: wrap a few turns around three fingers, tear off, done. Perfect for spontaneous cable fixes – a cable that's in the way during a dolly push can be taped to the next support with a single wrap, without having to search for the full roll first. Unlike classic gaffer tape (significantly thicker and stickier), lasso tape peels off cleanly, leaving no adhesive residue on paint or paint-like surfaces. This is essential when handling cameras and lenses – nobody wants sticky lenses after a shoot.
Where it's really used: keeping LED panels under control when magnets are missing. Securing cable bundles to a shoulder rig without them rattling with every movement. Emergency mounts for reflectors, monitor arms, even for quick tape marks on the floor (if gaffer tape isn't readily available). Some grips also use lasso tape prophylactically – wrap a few around the tool bag so nothing gets out of place during long takes.
Weight and pack size are the big advantages. A standard lasso roll weighs practically nothing, fits anywhere, and you don't waste adhesive surface on things you don't need to tape. Long-term mission? Taking several rolls costs you less than a single full roll of gaffer tape ballast.
Disadvantage: Not suitable for large-area taping or for work where you really need strength and permanent adhesion. For heavy cables or for attachments under vibration, gaffer tape is still the first choice. But for quick, reversible attachments on set – your daily companion.
