Aputure bi-color LED panel with 178×178mm emitting surface, 2,016 LED chips, and V-mount battery power for on-location film production.
Technical Details
The light-emitting surface measures 178 × 178 mm and consists of 2,016 individual LED chips, divided into 1,008 Daylight and 1,008 Tungsten LEDs. The aluminum housing weighs 2.8 kg with dimensions of 240 × 240 × 85 mm. The L7-C operates with V-Mount or Gold Mount batteries, as well as via an external power supply with 48V DC power. Control is via an LCD display on the unit, the Sidus Link app, or DMX512 protocol with 16-bit resolution for dimming and color temperature.
History & Development
Aputure introduced the L7-C in 2019 as the successor to the original L7 (2017), adding bi-color functionality to the Light Storm series. The unit was developed in response to the growing demand for compact, battery-powered LED panels for mobile productions. In 2021, a firmware update followed, integrating HSI color mode and enhanced effects.
Practical Use in Film
The L7-C quickly established itself as a standard for interview setups and small productions, where it is often used as a key light with the included softbox diffuser. In the Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit," cinematographers used multiple L7-C units to light the chess scenes. Its silent operation makes it ideal for sound recording, while its continuous light output allows for precise exposure metering. Typical workflows include using it as a fill light in combination with larger Aputure fixtures or as a practical light source behind diffusion material.
Comparison & Alternatives
A direct competitor is the Godox KNOWLED M600Bi with similar output power but a lower CRI of 92. The Litepanels Gemini 1×1 offers comparable specifications but costs twice as much. Within the Aputure family, the L7-C is positioned between the more compact AL-M9 (9 watts) and the more powerful 600d Pro (600 watts). For larger productions with higher lighting requirements, switching to HMI fixtures or LED panels with 1000 watts or more is recommended.
