L10-C

Murnau AI illustration
color temperature flow roll take

Compact LED spotlight with precise 10° beam angle, 3200 lumens output, and variable color temperature for selective accent lighting with minimal spillage.

Technical Details

The L10-C achieves a luminous efficacy of 3200 lumens with a 150W LED configuration and produces a homogeneous light beam with less than 8% fall-off in brightness from center to edge. The unit measures 180mm x 120mm x 85mm with a weight of 1.2kg and operates with a color rendering index of CRI 96+. CTB filters reduce light output by a maximum of 15%, while CTO filters cause a loss of 12%. Three main variants exist: L10-C Standard (Tungsten-based 3200K), L10-C Daylight (Daylight-based 5600K), and L10-C Bi-Color (continuously variable 2700K-6500K).

History & Development

Arri introduced the first L10-C in 2018 as a supplement to the SkyPanel series, based on findings from Netflix's production study on efficient accent lighting. In 2019, Dedolight developed a compact variant for independent productions with reduced power of 85W. The breakthrough came in 2021 with Astera's AX10-C, which integrated wireless DMX control and app control for the first time. Modern L10-C units today achieve switching times under 0.02 seconds and enable precise crossfades between different color temperatures.

Practical Application in Film

Christopher Nolan used L10-C arrays in "Tenet" (2020) for the time reversal sequences to create pinpoint accents without spill light. The narrow beam characteristic is suitable for selective object lighting in wide shots where conventional Fresnel spotlights would produce too much spill light. Typical workflow: positioning at a distance of 3-5m from the subject, DMX cabling for synchronized color temperature changes, combination with hazers for visible light beams. Disadvantage: limited area illumination requires multiple unit setups for larger subjects.

Comparison & Alternatives

The L10-C differs from standard spots through its precise 10° angle (vs. 12-15° for conventional narrow spots) and integrated color temperature control. LED Lekos offer similar beam precision but without variable color temperature. Modern alternatives include the L7-C (7° beam angle for extreme precision) and the L15-C (15° version for larger areas). For budget productions, focusable LED panels with barndoors and CTB/CTO gels replace the L10-C but do not achieve its beam homogeneity and color consistency.
