The adapter is made of anodized aluminum or steel and typically weighs 150-300 grams. The Junior receiver has an inner diameter of 28 mm (1⅛"), while the Baby stud measures exactly 16 mm (⅝"). Standard adapters are 8-12 cm long and feature one or two M8 locking screws. High-quality versions include additional safety pins to prevent rotation. The Junior/Baby terminology originated in the 1930s at Mole-Richardson in Hollywood, when their stand sizes were named after founder Peter Mole. Junior stands (for heavy fixtures from 5 kW) and Baby stands (for lighter units up to 2 kW) became industry standards. With the miniaturization of lighting from the 1980s onwards, adapters became indispensable, as modern LED fixtures often have Baby pins but need to be mounted on existing Junior infrastructure. Practical Use in Film
On "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), cinematographer Roger Deakins used Junior to Baby adapters to attach compact LED panels to heavy Junior stands, which had to be wind-stable for exterior shots. Typical workflows include rigging Kino Flo lights (Baby pin) to Junior combos for overhead lighting or mounting modern LED Fresnel lights to existing Junior infrastructure. The adapter allows for quick fixture changes without reconfiguring stands, but can lead to wobbling if improperly mounted.
Comparison & Alternatives
In contrast to the Baby to Spigot adapter (⅝" to ⅜"), the Junior to Baby adapter bridges a larger dimensional gap. Modern alternatives include quick-release systems like Matthews Studio Equipment's "Universal Mount" or ball head adapters with variable clamping. For very heavy fixtures (over 15 kg), direct Junior connections are safer than adapter constructions. For lightweight LED panels under 2 kg, Baby stands with direct connections are more efficient than the adapter solution.
