Compact HMI fixture at 575W or 1.2kW — quick setup, portable, perfect for location work and fast relight. Less heat than Par, sharper beam control.

You pull out the Jokester when you need to work fast and don't want to look like a PAR can. The compact 575W or 1.2kW HMI is the Swiss Army knife for mobile exterior shoots — weight is within acceptable limits, setup takes under five minutes, and the color temperature is immediately daylight-accurate. Unlike large Fresnel PAR units, you don't need to haul half the lighting studio.

Practically speaking, you'll quickly notice the difference on set: the Jokester runs significantly cooler than comparable PAR lights, which is a real advantage in tight interiors or when talent is standing in front of the fixture. HMI technology gives you more precise light control — you can work more finely with flags, cutters, and diffusers than with incandescent floodlights. The light is more focused, with less spill, and better illumination over longer distances without an overkill setup.

The 575 is sufficient for smaller exterior scenes or as a medium-distance key light. The 1.2kW is your standard for serious exterior shoots or when you need to fill larger areas with daylight equivalent — for example, in backlight situations or to illuminate building facades on a cloudy day. You'll need a ballast anyway, so factor in your power and cable infrastructure from the start. Unlike fast-cycling Tungsten PAR lights, an HMI has a short ignition time, but not instant on/instant off — this is relevant to workflow when making rapid lighting changes within the same setup.

Storage and Transport: The Jokester is thankfully constructed, but HMI lamps are consumables with a lifespan. Do not operate without a UV filter, and ensure the lamp is seated correctly — transport vibrations can cause ignition problems. With the right cucoloris and gobos in the HMI system, the Jokester also works excellently for patterned, creative lighting where you want to pin shapes and shadows. This makes it more versatile than some might underestimate.
