U.S. film industry censorship authority — 1930–1968 enforced Moral Code. Strictest content control in Hollywood history.

The Johnston Office — named after its head Eric Johnston — was the iron fist of censorship for the American film industry between 1930 and 1968. You can imagine: a screenwriter sits in their office, having written a scene that merely implies two unmarried people share a bed, and a censor strikes it. This was everyday reality. The Office strictly administered the Motion Picture Production Code — that moral rulebook that dictated what was allowed to happen on American screens and what wasn't.

In practice, it worked like this: before a production went into principal photography, the complete screenplay had to be submitted for approval. Office employees read every line, marked problematic elements — profanity, overly passionate kisses, allusions to sexuality, violence, even certain political statements — and demanded rewrites. If a finished print was presented without approval, economic ruin threatened: cinemas were forbidden to show the film. This was not a toothless accusation, but an existential threat to studios and producers. The Office held the purse strings.

The effects were visible everywhere: beds were replaced by two singles when a couple was supposed to lie in them. Kissing scenes were limited to three seconds. Actors had to keep at least one foot on the ground while kissing — yes, that was a real rule. Dialogues were censored to such an extent that some scenes required stylistic contortions to still make sense. A director or cinematographer noticed this immediately during shooting: the actress was not allowed to hold her head at a certain angle because it seemed too "suggestive."

From the mid-1960s onwards, the system began to crumble. Independents, European films, television — societal pressure and new competition made the rigid control increasingly absurd. In 1968, the Johnston Office was replaced by a ratings system that worked less preventatively and more informatively. But for two decades, this office had shaped Hollywood's visual language, forcing directors and cinematographers into detours and paradoxically often leading to more creative, subtle solutions — hidden meanings, suggestive cuts instead of explicit images. What the Office saw as a loss was sometimes artistic gain.
