Analyze film purely from within — form, editing, sound, independent of external context. Purist reading: what the material itself communicates, not biography or production.
Anyone who questions a film solely based on what the screen shows—editing rhythm, camera movement, sound design, image composition—is working immanently. The material itself becomes the critic. The director disappears behind their decisions, the production history is irrelevant, the author's biography is of no interest. What counts: the film's internal logic, its formal consistency, the tension between what is told and how it is told.
On set or in the edit, this means a radical focus. You sit in the DI suite and don't ask why the DP chose this lens—you ask if the visual language works in the context of the scene. A hard cut next to a camera move: What tension does this create? Sound design that breaks the silence: What emotional layer is revealed? The immanent view forces you to read every technical decision as a formal statement—not as coincidence, not as a budget solution, but as an intentional design element.
The tricky part of this method: It works brilliantly for films that consciously play with their form—where editing, sound, and image have an internal architecture. With poorly made films, it leads to questionable interpretations: one searches for deep structures where only carelessness prevailed. At the same time, it can blind one to what operates outside the film—the social reality against which or with which a film speaks. A montage of war images can be formally perfect and yet morally questionable—immanent critique would analyze the material, but not the ethical dimension.
Useful in practice: Immanent critique helps with editing when you've lost your way. Back to the material. What tension does the rhythm carry? Does the narrative style still hold true to itself? But as the sole approach to film analysis—too short-sighted. The best way: first work immanently, then broaden your perspective. Context allows the film to be understood; form reveals how it functions.
