Pneumatic effects rig for in-camera mechanics — smoke, water, debris, objects on cue. Controller runs via solenoid valves to remote actuators.

On set, you sometimes need movements that you can't control by hand or motor — smoke billowing from a specific window, paper flying on command, or a gush of water starting at precisely the right frame. The Imagination FX 7012 System solves such problems through pneumatic control. A compact control unit with multiple outputs — to which you connect compressed air hoses, each hose driving one or more actuators. The advantage: You can trigger each individual actuator remotely or via a timecode signal. This makes you flexible, without pyrotechnics, without electrical components in critical areas.

In practice, it looks like this: You mount your actuators — wind machine modules, smoke ejectors, paper launchers — onto the air hoses. The system itself remains out of frame or behind the scenes. Pneumatics are practically silent and reliable because they don't require complex electronics that can fail in damp or dusty environments. This is a significant advantage for water effects during exterior shoots. You need a good compressed air system on the cart, a compressor or bottle bank — that's the prerequisite. The hoses themselves are robust and quickly replaceable; if an actuator is defective, you replace it in minutes.

A typical scenario: Simulating an explosion where debris and dust should fly, without detonating actual explosives. Or in a drama, where a character is supposed to throw a stack of boxes out of a window — you hide a paper actuator underneath, which triggers on the cut, and the actor only needs to mimic the movement. This saves takes and is safer. In horror, the system is popular for jump scares where something suddenly flies into frame.

Important: The 7012 is not an all-purpose solution. It is specialized for simple, robust effects. For complex motion sequences requiring centimeter precision, you would more likely opt for motorized solutions or practical hand-driven work. But for a quick, reliable effect on set — triggering a guest actor, pushing a puff of smoke at precisely the right moment — the Imagination FX 7012 is a proven tool in the grip arsenal.
