Hybrid Log-Gamma HDR format designed for broadcast compatibility without metadata.
Definition
HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is an HDR standard, developed by the BBC and NHK, which does not require metadata and works on both HDR and SDR displays.
Practical Application
HLG is ideal for live broadcasting: no metadata processing needed, direct transmission possible. BBC iPlayer, YouTube, and many TV channels use HLG for HDR content.
Technical Details
Gamma Curve: A hybrid of log (upper half) and standard gamma (lower half). No static or dynamic metadata required. Backward Compatible: SDR displays show an acceptable image without special processing.
