Chinese anamorphic lenses (35–135mm, T2.9) known for blue lens flares and cost-effective alternative to ARRI Master Anamorphic, with lower precision tolerances.

Technical Details

The Great Joy Anamorphic series includes focal lengths from 35mm to 135mm with a constant T2.9 aperture and a minimum focus distance of 0.8m. The optical design is based on an 8-element construction with special aspherical lenses and a blue multi-layer coating. The lenses weigh between 1.8kg (35mm) and 2.4kg (135mm), feature an 82mm filter thread, and a uniform 95mm front diameter for matte boxes. The focus and aperture rings are equipped with standard 0.8-module gears.

History & Development

Great Joy launched the Anamorphic series in 2019. A Full Frame version for large sensors followed in 2021, and a compact "Compact" variant with reduced weight was released in 2023.

Practical Use in Film

The lenses produce blue lens flares and require precise focus pulling. Breathing is below 3%. Primarily used in low-budget and streaming productions.

Comparison & Alternatives

Lower mechanical precision than Sirui Anamorphic or Atlas Orion, but more distinctive optical characteristics. Lower imaging performance than ARRI Master Anamorphic at approximately 15% of the price. DZOFilm Vespid Anamorphics offer a similar price range with more neutral color rendition.
