The group as protagonist—that is the real strength when working with female gangs. Not the individual heroine, but the collective carries the story. This requires a completely different dramaturgical approach than the classic individual hero drama. The camera must learn to show hierarchies without verbalizing them: Who stands where in the frame? Who looks at whom? This non-verbal grammar often replaces lengthy exposition.
In practice, this means: You need a clear internal structure for the group—even if it's never explicitly explained. A leader, specialists for certain tasks, the moral compass, the wild one. On set, I work with fixed positions within the frame. A leader always sits or stands slightly elevated or centrally. Conflicts then arise through glances, through body distance, through the camera turning away. This is more efficient than any dialogue. In editing and montage, you work with reaction shots—not just to one person, but to the group as an echo chamber. When a decision is made, you cut not to the leader's face, but to the gazes of the others, who understand or agree.
The group's codes and rituals are told visually: shared movement patterns, signs, clothing, the way they form up in danger. This is cinematically much more interesting than individualistic hero narratives because it makes the image composition itself the storyteller. The camera becomes an ethnographer—not voyeuristic, but participatory. At the same time, you avoid romanticizing the group. This is precisely where mistakes happen: Directors film female gangs like a fashion catalog instead of a functional unit with real conflicts, betrayal, internal resistance. The strongest scenes arise when the collective breaks from within—not because of an external enemy, but because the codes fail.
Furthermore: sound design and music take on a new role. They mark collective moments more strongly than in classic dramas. A shared rhythm, a song only this group knows—this creates belonging and identity faster than a hundred words. And in casting: balance is critical. Not one star and five extras, but several roles with real weight, even if some have less screen time.
