16mm camera with dampened mirror system, since 1963. Quiet enough for sync sound handheld work. Reflex viewfinder shows exactly what the lens sees — no parallax, precise framing while shooting.

What is the Eclair NPR?

The Eclair NPR (1963) – "NPR" stands for Noiseless Portable Reflex – was the first truly quiet, handheld 16mm film camera. With an operating noise of approximately 25 dBA, it enabled sync sound for handheld shots for the first time and revolutionized documentary filmmaking. Cinema Vérité and Direct Cinema would not have been possible without it.

The 1963 Revolution

The Problem Before

  • 16mm cameras too loud for sync sound
  • Dialogue scenes required post-synchronization
  • Documentary film = staged or silent
  • Large crews needed for professional work

The NPR Solution

  • Quiet enough for simultaneous sound recording
  • One cameraman + one sound recordist = complete team
  • Spontaneous shots with dialogue possible
  • "True" documenting instead of staging

Cinema Vérité and Direct Cinema

The NPR enabled two revolutionary movements:

Cinema Vérité (France)

Jean Rouch and the NPR

French ethnologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch was crucial to the NPR's development:

Defined Requirements

  • Quiet for sync sound
  • Lightweight for African expeditions
  • Reliable under extreme conditions
  • Handheld stability

Chronique d'un été (1961)

  • NPR prototype in use
  • First "Cinema Vérité" film
  • Interview format on the street
  • Documentary as dialogue

  • Crystal-controlled motor
  • Precise 24 fps (or 25 fps)
  • Synchronized with Nagra tape recorder
  • No cable between camera and recorder needed
