Drone Shot

flow para roll shot take

Aerial footage captured using unmanned aircraft; professional drones like DJI Inspire 2 carry cameras up to 7 kg with 15–27 min flight time and 3-axis gimbal stabilization.

Technical Details

Professional film drones like the DJI Inspire 2 or Freefly Alta X carry cameras up to 7 kg and achieve flight times of 15-27 minutes. Gimbal systems compensate for movements on 3 axes with precision below 0.02° at a 2000Hz reaction time. Transmission ranges extend up to 7 km (DJI Lightbridge 2) with a real-time 1080p video stream. Variants include fixed-wing drones for long-distance flights, heavy-lift drones for large cameras (RED, ARRI), and FPV racing drones for extreme maneuvers at 150+ km/h.

History & Development

The first civilian camera drones emerged in 2006-2008 from Mikrokopter and 3D Robotics. The breakthrough came in 2013 with the DJI Phantom, which first enabled stabilized HD shots for under €1,500. Hollywood's first major drone production was "Transformers: Age of Extinction" (2014) after FAA approval. In 2016, the EU drone regulation introduced uniform standards, followed by remote ID systems and automated airspace monitoring in 2019.

Practical Application in Film

"Skyfall" (2012) used drones for the motorcycle chase over Istanbul's rooftops; "Game of Thrones" established drone establishing shots as a trademark. Typical workflow: flight planning via Litchi or DroneDeploy, live monitoring by a separate operator, simultaneous recording in 4K/RAW and HD proxy. Advantages: costs of €200-€800/day versus €8,000-€15,000 for helicopters, setup in under 10 minutes, flights below 50m altitude without airspace closure.

Comparison & Alternatives

Drones replace 80% of classic helicopter shots below 150m altitude. Cable cam systems offer higher payload capacity (up to 25 kg) and unlimited "flight time," but are limited to predefined routes. Steadicam operators remain indispensable for close-ups of people and interiors. FPV drones handle extreme action shots that even helicopters cannot manage – such as flying through buildings or under bridges.
