Technical Details
The DJI Transmission transmitter measures 79 × 79 × 43 mm and weighs 180 grams, while the receiver measures 122 × 87 × 43 mm and weighs 295 grams. The system uses DJI's O4 transmission protocol with automatic frequency hopping (FHSS) and supports SDI and HDMI inputs up to 6K30. The integrated 1TB SSD enables local recording in Apple ProRes 422 HQ or H.265. Battery life lasts up to 1.8 hours for the transmitter and 2.5 hours for the receiver.
History & Development
DJI released the Transmission system in September 2023. It is based on the O3 technology from the Mini 3 series, adapted for film productions. Firmware 1.2 (2024) added RAW recording and extended color spaces.
Practical Use in Film
Greig Fraser used the system on "The Creator" (2023) for handheld setups. Main uses: wireless gimbal work, car rigs, remote cameras. Standard workflow: simultaneous transmission to Video Village and DIT station with local recording in high resolution. Low latency enables wireless focus control.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to Teradek Bolt 4K Max: higher resolution, 2,499 Euros instead of 8,000 Euros, but lower range than Teradek's 1,500-meter guarantee. SmallHD Focus Bolt TX transmits a maximum of 1080p60. Hollyland Mars 4K is cheaper, but only has a 150-meter range. DJI Transmission: best value for money for budget productions. Teradek is more reliable for critical live broadcasts.
