DJI RS 3 Pro: 3-axis gimbal with 4.5 kg payload, 1.8" OLED touchscreen, 12h battery life, and integrated LiDAR autofocus (±1 cm accuracy up to 14 m).
Technical Details
The gimbal features a 1.8-inch OLED touchscreen display and a battery life of up to 12 hours with the included BG21 grip. The carbon fiber axis arms reduce vibrations and allow tilt angles from +180° to -95°, roll angles of ±45°, and pan angles of ±360°. The system supports Active Track Pro 3.0 with a tracking range of up to 20 meters. The integrated Lidar focusing (Lidar Range Finder) operates with an accuracy of ±1 cm at distances from 0.3 to 14 meters.
History & Development
DJI introduced the RS 3 Pro in May 2022 as the successor to the RS 2 Pro, expanding the Ronin S series launched in 2020 for professional film productions. The system weighs 1.8 kg and supports cameras up to 4.5 kg payload. The Lidar autofocus function automatically measures distances and controls compatible lenses without a cable connection to the camera.
Practical Use in Film
The gimbal is suitable for heavy cine cameras like the RED Komodo or Sony FX6. Three operating modes allow for handheld, low-mode, and briefcase-mode shots. The automatic axis locking shortens setup time between takes. The DJI Ronin app allows remote control with a range of up to 100 meters.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to the standard RS 3 (3 kg payload), the Pro model offers 50% higher load capacity and Lidar focusing. Main competitors include the Zhiyun Crane 4S (6.5 kg payload) and the Freefly MoVI Pro (6.8 kg). The RS 3 Pro offers software integration and precise motor control, while heavier systems like the MoVI Pro are used with RED Epic setups and large cine lenses.
