Photorealistic CGI recreation of a real actor for dangerous stunts, crowd scenes, or de-aging.
Definition
A Digital Double is a completely computer-generated version of an actor that is so realistic it is indistinguishable from the original. It enables shots that would be impossible or too dangerous with real people.
Practical Application
Stunt doubles for dangerous action ("Mission Impossible"), posthumous appearances (Carrie Fisher in "Rogue One"), de-aging (Robert De Niro in "The Irishman"). Every Marvel film uses Digital Doubles for superhero action.
Technical Details
Creation: 3D scan (photogrammetry, LiDAR), motion capture, facial performance capture. Subsurface scattering simulates skin translucency. Machine learning improves facial animation. The biggest challenges: eyes and hair.
