Since digital sensors became the standard in the 2000s, 16:9 has become the default choice — not because it's aesthetically perfect, but because it's economically unavoidable.
On set, you notice this immediately when framing. Compared to 4:3 — the format of the old TV era — you gain width on the sides. This fundamentally changes your composition. Where you previously had to stack vertically, you can now spread horizontally. Two actors side-by-side need less depth, more horizontal space. This isn't an advantage or disadvantage, just a different way of playing. The practical consequences in editing and post-production are significant. 4K footage in 16:9 format (3840×2160) is considerably more storage-friendly than true scope resolutions. You can work with standard output devices — monitors, HDR TVs, even projectors for testing. Grading is less complicated because the color science is optimized for this aspect ratio standard. Only when producing for cinema and truly needing scope do you have to consciously decide whether to shoot 16:9 with pillarbox anamorphic lensing or set up with a wider resolution from the outset.
A practical point: For documentaries and news, 16:9 is practically mandatory because editing suites, archives, and broadcast standards are aligned with it. For feature film productions with budgets, you have more freedom of choice — but most still opt for 16:9 to maintain flexibility in post. Zoom, pan, reframe — everything is easier in this format. Only creatives with a clear scope plan consciously go wider.
